DESIGN MISSION

My design mission is to blend storytelling into the tangible world. I use these frameworks and narratives to weave stories that immerse and deliver through physical manifestations.

SELENA NORMAN

I am a Brooklyn-based environments and objects designer. As a graduate of Carnegie Mellon in Industrial Design, I have been involved in a series of world building projects for environments both large and small. Most recently, I launched Dopl World, a solo boutique jewelry and wearables brand with a focus on traditional industrial design processes blended into abstracted world building.

Previously, I worked for immersive pioneers such as the Museum of Ice Cream, The Wonder, the living history museum Heritage Park and more. I have contributed original concepts to technical production on large scale immersive environments in the U.S. and Canada as well as in Singapore.

SPECIALITIES

  • Through Dopl World, I have had hand’s on experience with a wide range of metals and materials. *pun intended* Creating jewelry concept through to fabrication has involved processes like silicone mold making, resin casting and manipulation, CAD, metal smithing, sewing, pattern making, and more.

  • My previous work experience yielded a portfolio with a whimsical to mature range, all rooted in the expression of a greater story. Using form and scale to immerse the viewer in that narrative gives me the ability to communicate through more human channels.

  • A Carnegie Mellon University Industrial Design degree laid the foundation for a strong background in understanding and expressing form. 3D modeling, rendering, traditional form modeling, and other industry processes cemented my approach to objects and spaces through the lens of functionality with a spin of fantasy.

  • Dopl World, Museum of Ice Cream, and other commercial designs required the ability to think beyond the tech pack and into ephemeral spaces, pulling from the human experience to create designs with depth.

  • Using my experience in commercial public facing designs, i approach the ethos of projects with an understanding from the perspective of the designer as well as the viewer. Blending the multireality perception of objects and spaces through those perspective shifts allows for the work to immerse in the internal and external. The goal is to capture the nature of an ‘experience’.
